Trustiva tablet is a fixed-dose combination of three antiretroviral medicines—Efavirenz (600 mg), Emtricitabine (200 mg), and Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (300 mg)—used to treat HIV-1 infection. It works by inhibiting reverse transcriptase, stopping the virus from multiplying.
Key Pharmacology
Mechanism of Action:
Efavirenz (NNRTI): Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor; directly binds to the enzyme to stop DNA synthesis.
Emtricitabine (NRTI): Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor; acts as a nucleoside analog that causes chain termination in viral DNA.
Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (NtRTI): Nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor; acts as a prodrug that gets converted into an active metabolite to inhibit viral DNA replication.
Pharmacodynamics: Trustiva reduces the viral load (amount of virus) in the blood and increases the CD4+ cell count (white blood cells that fight infection).
Dosage & Administration: Typically taken as one tablet daily, on an empty stomach, preferably at bedtime to minimize side effects like dizziness.
Contraindications & Warnings: Contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. It may cause serious side effects, including liver problems, kidney damage, reduced bone density, and psychiatric symptoms. It is not a cure for HIV.
