Ondican 2 Injection is a formulation of the antiemetic medication Ondansetron. It is primarily indicated to prevent and treat severe nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and post-operative recovery.
Mechanism of Action :
Cytotoxic drugs and surgical trauma release serotonin (5-HT) from enterochromaffin cells in the small intestine.
This serotonin activates vagal afferents via 5-HT3 receptors, stimulating the vomiting center in the medulla.
It also stimulates the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ).
Ondansetron selectively antagonizes these 5-HT3 receptors, inhibiting the emetic reflex.
Pharmacokinetics :
Onset of Action: Highly rapid; typically begins within 30 minutes of administration.
Route of Administration: Intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) injection.
Metabolism: Primarily metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 system (CYP3A4, CYP2D6, and CYP1A2).
Half-Life: Approximately 3 to 6 hours, though this can be prolonged in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
Excretion: Excreted primarily via the kidneys (urine) and partly through feces.
