Fol 5G (Folic acid tablet) is a B-vitamin supplement. In pharmacology, it functions as a synthetic form of Vitamin B9 required for DNA synthesis, cell division, and the maturation of red blood cells (RBCs). It prevents megaloblastic anemia and birth defects during pregnancy.
Mechanism of Action :
Tetrahydrofolate Conversion: Once ingested, folic acid is reduced to tetrahydrofolic acid (THF) and its derivatives by dihydrofolate reductase.
DNA & RNA Synthesis: THF acts as a coenzyme in 1-carbon transfer reactions. It is critical for the conversion of deoxyuridylate to thymidylate, which is required for purine and pyrimidine biosynthesis, ultimately allowing cell growth and DNA/RNA replication.
RBC Production: This accelerated cellular growth stimulates erythropoiesis (RBC formation), curing or preventing the fatigue associated with folate-deficiency anemia.
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption: Rapidly absorbed in the proximal portion of the small intestine. Peak plasma concentration is reached about 1 hr after oral administration.
Distribution: Extensively bound to plasma proteins. Folic acid is distributed to all body tissues, with heavy storage primarily in the liver.
Excretion: Excess amounts are excreted unchanged in the urine.
