Disodium EDTA (edetate disodium) is a polyvalent chelating agent that binds to divalent and trivalent metal ions (such as calcium and lead). In pharmacology, it is primarily used in emergency settings for the treatment of severe hypercalcemia and ventricular arrhythmias associated with digitalis toxicity.
Mechanism of Action :
Calcium Chelation: Disodium EDTA has a high affinity for serum calcium. When administered intravenously, it rapidly chelates (binds to) calcium ions to form soluble, stable complexes that are easily excreted by the kidneys.
Negative Inotropism: By lowering serum calcium levels, disodium EDTA induces a transient hypocalcemic state. This exerts a negative inotropic effect on the heart, antagonizing the chronotropic and inotropic effects of digitalis glycosides.
